“Clay responds best when we listen rather than control…”
Toni Mathias Harvey is a gifted artist whose creativity seems to flow effortlessly through every medium she touches. With a B.A. from Hood College and an M.F.A. in Ceramics from Antioch College, Toni has spent decades exploring the intersection of form, feeling, and the natural world. Her work spans photography, woodworking, sculpture, and ceramics — both wheel-thrown and hand-built — each reflecting her singular ability to see what others might overlook and transform it into beauty.
Her ceramics have earned numerous awards since her academic years and have been featured in major media outlets, including The Discovery Channel and Ceramics Monthly.
Toni’s passion for teaching is as profound as her love of making. She has taught ceramics and clay to students of all ages — from children just discovering the wheel to adults rediscovering the joy of touch and form. Her teaching philosophy centers on trust between human and earth; she often begins a first throwing lesson by asking students to place a ventilated paper bag over their heads and work purely by feel, reminding them that clay responds best when we listen rather than control.
Beyond her studio, Toni has long championed art education and community engagement. She led the Grace Art program in Northern Virginia schools and directed Empty Bowls in the Washington, D.C. area for many years, bringing art and service together to nourish both creativity and compassion.
After more than 40 years in the D.C. area, Toni and her husband, Ted Harvey — a U.S. Army veteran and jazz musician who led the renowned Difficult Run Jazz Band for over three decades — have made their home in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania. There, Toni is joyfully immersed in family life as a mother and grandmother to three grandchildren attending William Penn Charter School, and she is establishing her creative presence within the Chestnut Hill arts community.
Her current body of work, Elemental Ceramics, reflects her enduring belief that creation is a conversation between the elements — earth, water, fire, and time — and the human hand. Each piece honors that dialogue: grounded in patience, shaped by flow, and transformed by fire.
